So Fabulous Event

So Fabulous glitter cupcakes

I really am a lucky girl – on Wednesday I attended a blogger event run by the guys at So Fabulous at Littlewoods. It was the first event they’d done ever, and I think they did a great job! I feel like sometimes I don’t give them their dues when in fact they are one of the shops I purchase from most, and some of my favourite clothes are from either the South or So Fabulous collections!

So Fabulous Event

One of the SF clothing rails. Peplums, lace, florals and sequins.

So Fabulous Event

Another SF rail, this time with hot pinks and camouflage jackets that everyone loved.

We all had a browse of their latest collection, and I got to try on some dresses I’d been eyeing on site for ages (and which I will probably go and buy now, haha!). They also set us a little team challenge – half of us were asked to come up with a look for a job interview, and the other half – my team – were challenged to come up with a look for a night out dancing.

Becky was on model duties for the team I was in, and here she is working our night out look where we took the “more is more” approach:

So Fabulous Event

Becky working her “night out in the west end” look! I couldn’t fit in the INCREDIBLE heels she was wearing.

Awesome, no? I also loved the other team’s look for a job interview – I’d never have thought to put a blouse under a skater dress (I’d have just worn it as a casual day dress) but Betty looked so smart and gorgeous:

So Fabulous Event

Becky models her “job interview” look – I loved this!

Afterwards we all caught up and also got into a bit of a debate where we talked about which brands we think are doing great things, what we like and dislike about plus size fashion, the size ranges of plus size brands and also the eternal plus size model debate. I always love a good discussion about these things, hopefully I didn’t get too carried away!

I used the event as an excuse to try out my new camera, although I’m still a total novice and half my pictures are a blurry mess. But I got some gorgeous ones of some of the other bloggers in attendence, yay!

So Fabulous Event

Love Mel. She looked so good in her dress I had not-buying-regret for the rest of the day!

So Fabulous Event

Becky and Naomi posing for the camera!

I loved the clothes (especially the dresses, as always) and the team were super positive and passionate about the clothes, which was brilliant to see. I have to say I mostly just loved catching up with my blogging buddies seen above and including Kirsty and Hanna, and meeting Betty and Toni for the first time, finally! Bring on Plus North!

Hello all, and more importantly: happy new year! My 2013 so far has been a bit sleep-deprived, but hopefully that won’t be a trend, eh?

I had an almost abnormally good year in 2012. I found a great job, caught up with old friends, took part in Burger Queen (you can see me, neck-less, talking in their funding vid!), had a long awaited holiday (even if it did rain for over half the time I was there) and met some absolutely incredible people. The best thing though? I got my blogging mojo back! And it paid off – one of my plus size fashion heroes, Velvet d’Amour, shot me for her magazine Volup2. I was interviewed in The Times, and my literal dream has come true in the form of being able to design a dress for an upcoming Simply Be collection. ACTUALSCREAM. I will talk more about it in a separate post, but I really hope you all like it.

But more importantly I was happier with my wardrobe than I’ve been in a long time. I actually think I wore some more interesting outfits in 2012 than in all the time I’ve been blogging – probably because I was leaving the house a lot more. Anyway, here are my favourites over the past year, in case you missed them first time round!

Eddy and Bri dress

I’ve got a lot on my plate for 2013, no less than moderating a discussion panel at LPSFW next month, and helping to organise this year’s Plus London 3 in November! I just hope I can keep on enjoying running this blog. Thanks so much for sticking with me through 2012, and I hope you have a fat and fabulous 2013! x

Hi everyone, hope you’re all really well! It seems I’ve succumbed to that great blogging tradition of being too busy to blog in any regular capacity. Hopefully I’ll figure out a routine soon, and things’ll get back to normal. BUT, I wanted to alert you all to a baby project of mine and Isha’s: Curve Social!

So, one of the best things about blogging, especially plus size and fat acceptance blogging, is meeting other bloggers and hanging out. There are tons of events happening in London in all kinds of flavours, like The Weigh In (I went on Thursday, it was great!), BGP, LPSFW, to name a few. These are all pretty big events, but Isha and myself wondered if we could do something a bit more informal, not necessarily even about fashion. And we’ve come up with the idea of a monthly meet up, with fun activities that are already going on.

The first meet up is Saturday October 27th: one week today! We’re going to head down to Drink Shop & Dance for their Thriller Night! I’m really looking forward to it! If you want to come along, drop us a line on our facebook group, tumblr or email us at curvesocial(at)gmail(dot)com.

See you soon!

Hello my dears, there appears to be a few events coming up that all look to be great fun! I’m sure you know of them already, but just in case I thought I’d post about them – click the images and they’ll take you to each respective site.

I have been looking forward to Fattylympics for SO long! It’s organised by Kay, who arranged the amazing Big Bum Jumble in 2010, in fact all the profits from that have gone to help set up this event. It’s a fun, fat friendly send up of the Olympics complete with stalls, games, competitions, and its own theme tune (written and recorded by Verity from Electrelane, indie fans). It takes place on Saturday 7th July, 12pm – 5pm at Grassroots Resource Centre, West Ham, London. I’ll be stewarding, so see you there!

If you aren’t in London, then another awesome event is happening on Saturday July 7th: Plus North! Headed up by Becky and Toni, this is the northern arm of Plus London, with sponsors such as Simply Be (complete with a catwalk show!), Excite and Trapped in a Skinny World. It costs £5 for a ticket and takes place at Aspire in Leeds from 1pm – 6pm. It’s going to be great, can’t wait to read all about it.

Another London event (sorry peeps) that takes place in a couple of weeks! Katie has organised a clothing swap for sizes 14 and up on her fabulous roof terrace on Saturday May 26th, from 1:30pm. Make sure you bring at least 5 items, too!

Hope to see you at Fattylympics and the swap, and have fun at Plus North!

As you might have seen in my last post, I am attempting to “be more outrageous” in 2012, including competing in Burger Queen, London’s fat beauty pageant, on March 15th. Do come down and cheer (or jeer) at me!

One of the reasons I really wanted to get involved with Burger Queen is because I’m a big fan of Scottee. It’s just bizarre how someone so unashamedly FAT (it’s a big part of all of his projects) can be held in such esteem by typically judgemental circles. This is a guy who parades the pages of i-D on the regular, treads the boards of the west end and hangs out with various celebrities and débutantes, while always FAT FAT FATTING in their faces. Awesome. Oh, and he dresses impeccably! fass_london_13_v

So what makes him tick? I thought I’d ask him a few questions…

Hello! Please tell us a little about yourself?

I am Scottee. I am a London based performer, director and show off and I enjoy wearing sequins. I’m from a council estate in Kentish Town and I like to eat Ravioli on toast.

How would you describe your style?

British Camp I think – I like anything that looks a bit naff, cheap or ‘showbiz’ that elude to being expensive. Anything shiny really made out of 6 tinsel wigs and a glitter slash curtain thrown onto a shoulder suits me.

I am so excited for Burger Queen! What inspired you to put on this event?

I’m bored of Channel 4 telling me that I am fat therefor I am an unhappy, broken human being. I wanted to make something that was in response to those programs that showed the world fatties are largely happy, well rounded people who are up for a laugh. Burger Queen was born. (Interestingly, after this interview one of the sponsors of BQ pulled out, because the brand didn’t want to “promote unhealthy living”. Jesus fuck.)

You had a great t-shirt line available a few years ago. Are you planning on any more gorgeous fatty clothes? Please say yes.

Yes I still sell shirts on my website that only come in an XXL – I would love to make more stuff, its boring wearing Evans’ idea of ‘glam’ – this usually leaves big women in smocks with sequin butterflies – RUBBISH! I want to make big girls wear sequin catsuits and plus size eyelashes!

You are fat and incredibly fabulous. When did you decide to be fabulous, instead of the kind of drab, self-hating misery everyone expects people like us to be?

I never made a conscious choice, I’ve always love dressing fancy and fancy dress, my mum tells me that at school or parties I wouldn’t attend unless the outfit was really good. I think Blue Peter also made me very interested in making funny clothes to wear, of course. I never saw Tracey Island as a toy, more an understated hat.

Where are your favourite places to shop?

Ebay!  I collect Dawn French’s 1647 (French & Teague) line, vintage only and 80’s ‘Essence’ clobber. I don’t think these clothes look any good on women but all my fat girlfriends always remark that on me they look tailor made. I think the high street designers forget big women don’t all have a big bust so the clothes often look much better on me and my smaller moobs. I also like the idea that during the day I wear fat women’s clothes from the 80’s.

Lastly, what’s your favourite piece of fashion advice?

Get a hot glue gun! I’ve made some wonderful things by sticking something to something. Have a go and then wear your earphones, that way even if you look ridiculous you won’t be able to hear what the general public think!

Thanks Scottee! As well as BQ taking place at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern each Thursday this month, he’s performing a show every Saturday in April at the Roundhouse. You can find more info here. He has a blog, too!

Well… That “hiatus” didn’t last very long at all, did it? That said, the breather was worth it – especially the four days I managed to go, cold turkey, without twitter. How I managed that I shall never know.

All sort of exciting stuff has been happening. I’m longer working for Yours Clothing, which, to be quite honest, was a major conflict of interest with the blog. So while I’m poor and can’t buy purdy clothes for the foreseeable, it’ll work out better in the long run. I hope?!

This year, the nearest I got to some sort of resolution was to “be more outrageous” in 2012. My 1st step towards this has been signing up to compete in Burger Queen 2012. Oh dear lord. Here’s the blurb:

Scottee welcomes you back for a super sized second helping of his infamous beauty pageant Burger Queen! Every Thursday in March, he will be whittling down a wide range of fantastic fatties in his unique game show for fat people. Each chunky contestant will endure three rounds designed to find the perfect chub to be crowned Burger Queen 2012. Rounds include trend (flaunting your fat fashion), taste (your signature dish served to our judges) and talent (light entertainment for heavyweights).

Each heat is judged by some wonderful faces including Nick Grimshaw, Paloma Faith, Cock N Bull Kid, Alison Hammond, Immodesty Blaize, Sue Tilley, Princess Julia, BQ ’11 winner Nina Neon, not to mention Scottee’s Mum and our resident judge & plus size princess Amy Lamé.

The winner will receive £100 cash, £400 worth of gifts from our sponsors, a bottle of plonk, the coveted Burger Queen medal, the golden unhappy meal and the chance to perform at the Roundhouse CircusFest in ‘Camp’!

More? Over the course of the contest Scottee will also be putting himself through the murky world of fad diets, celebrity fitness DVD’s and some alternative exercise classes – NHS’ answer to Fanny Craddock, Dr Tim Crocker-Buque will be keeping an eye on him and vlogging his progress!

Other highlights include guest performances from chubby chasers Myra Dubois, Timberlina, Russella &Tenor Ladies, Sami Knight is on the decks playing big (gastric) band tunes, the amazing ‘What’s Jude eating this week?’ is back, the weekly Pie Chart Rundown and of course ‘the show’s not over till the Miss Annabel Sings

The search to find the perfect porker has begun – who will become Burger Queen?

It is a big, fat, celebration of all things fat and outrageous, and I just can’t WAIT! Although, I am slightly terrified.

As well as myself, Charlotte Cooper of Obesity Timebomb is competing this Thursday and will be awesome. Heat one featured the sexual siren that is Bethany from My Arched Eyebrow – and she won! The final takes place on Thursday March 29th, so do come along to help me cheer her on!

As for me, my heat is next Thursday, March 15th. If you’d like to come along you can order tickets here – I’d LOVE to see you (and need all the emotional support I can get, haha!)

Stay tuned for an interview with Head Fatso, Scottee, himself!

Hello! A bit of a change of scenery. Last year I was fortunate enough to attend press/blogger events – but was too much of a ditz to blog about them, which makes me feel so bad – I’m sorry, nice people! So this year, while I’ve stopped accepting things to review, events are different because they mean I can catch up with other bloggers. For that reason alone, I’ll never say no. And this year I’ve resolved to talk about them!

iphone 066

First event of 2012 was previewing Gok Wan’s spring collection for Simply Yours. It’s always a joy to catch up with the Simply team, and there were so many of my fave bloggers in attendance: Bethany, Naomi, Rosie, Em, Laura, Rivkie from Slink Magazine, Becky, Mhairi, Clare, Georgina, Cheryl (happy birthday!), Caroline and other lovely blogging ladies!

This was Gok’s Wall of Fame collection. While earlier ones had experimented with different designs, ideas and materials, this collection was strictly back to basics, improving on Gok’s first ever collection. I have to say I’m always a big fan, as someone with a large back and an A cup it’s difficult for me to find genuinely sexy, luxurious AND well fitting bras. I have three pairs and just adore them. Actually, you can read my reviews here.

iphone 071

There was nothing I didn’t like about the collection – it doesn’t seem like shapewear (although having road tested some knickers and slips I can tell you they do smooth you out, if that’s your cup of tea). Just really smart, sexy underwear. I loved the sporty feel, the colours and the little signature touches. Can’t wait to get my hands on some items!

Dress: H&M
Belt: (old)
Dalmatian faux fur collar: ASOS

Oh dear – and here’s me, looking very dishevelled, with the man himself. I have to say he was an absolute gent – well, apart from grabbing Georgina and Caroline’s bosoms, but they did ask politely first…

Huge thanks to the Simply Yours team for inviting me and for the non-instagram photos! x

Hi everyone!

I’ve been struggling the past few weeks and not felt like updating the blog. I definitely didn’t want to recap 2011 as it was quite a horrible year for me, with me being the lowest since the age of about 20 to the point where I frightened myself and those around me. I managed to claw myself out of it over the months, but as a result I’m not holding out too many hopes for 2012 – my main ambition is just to survive.

BUT – obviously, the thing I am most proud of having done last year was seeing Plus London through to the end – it was a fantastic day and I think everyone who came really enjoyed themselves which was brilliant. It was incredibly stressful so when I was asked about organising a second event I declined, but luckily the awesome Claire stepped up and took it on. And guess what? Plus London 2 is looking bigger, better and a damn sight better organised than when I was doing it!

Alongside the shopping, meal, pop up studio and party, there’s a blogger tour at Anna Scholz HQ, a clothing swap and a catwalk show from One Stop Plus featuring yours truly, hahaha. The party venue is the same as last year, kindly sponsored by Simply Be!

I really can’t wait – it’s only three weeks from today. If you fancy attending (the Anna Scholz event is fully subscribed to bloggers only, and there is a waiting list) please email supermonkey79 to register your interest.

See you there! xx

Curves in Couture

Image: Me (short, fat, brunette) standing in the middle of a party in a black dress with white musical note print, red belt and red shoes. I'm making claws with my hands and doing a "grrr" face.

Dress: Made by my mum!
Belt: Love Label, many years old
Shoes: Torrid (gifted) (dammit!)
Headband: Primark, also old

I’m glad my mum finally made me this dress after having the material and pattern pinned and cut for about five years. It’s from this Butterick pattern, although it’s not nearly as fitted in the photo. But I guess that’s just how my body is. As you can see, while I’m fat I would never consider myself curvy at all, there’s no waist, no boobs! And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The photo is, of course, from the Models of Diversity Curves in Couture event from this Thursday, which was great fun! I’ll be writing it up for Vogue Curvy, just waiting on photos as the ones I took were absolutely atrocious. (My fault, I should’ve sat in the photo pit. n3wb error.)

The main thing about events like this is getting to hangout with bloggers again, because we all get on so well! I mostly hung out with Claire (my rescuer!), Rosie, Em who I got to meet for the first time finally, and Georgina. Here they are looking stunning:

And I got a bit starstruck meeting the legend that is Velvet D’Amour! She is absolutely stunning in real life. I am in fact doing a shoot with her tomorrow for her new magazine, and I am BRICKING IT.

You guys. I wrote a 1,000+ word post talking all about this event, my honest thoughts about the new Curvissa label… and WordPress ate it. So here is a photo post without much text! If you have any questions please do comment and I’ll answer as soon as I can.

My thoughts in brief: Always excited to have new shopping options. Josie is bloody gorgeous. The clothes aren’t outrageous or anything, but that’s okay. The clothes are great quality and well thought out. Fiona Parkhouse is really cool. LaCara and the Curvissa team are lovely!
